The Transport of London Map is a visual trip planner for bus routes in the Greater London area. It complements useful text based apps such as the official TfL Plan-a-journey and TfL Go app.
It shows the location of every station and line on the TfL bus network in a zoomable, interactive diagram. It uses Sirv dynamic imaging to render the map in thousands of small squares (tiles) on demand and display them rapidly. The map is served on a cloud, so it works quickly even over cellular connections.
Many people think they know how to navigate around the transport system but the truth is that the city's layout makes it difficult to get a clear idea of what's where and which routes connect with each other. For example, the map of the Tube system doesn't show the overlapping routes that serve a few stations in a row - like Leicester Square and Covent Garden. Nor does it show the shortest journeys between any two stations on the same line.
In addition to the underground and overground, the map shows routes run by the Docklands Light Railway in London's docklands, and the city's cable car links across the Thames. The Thameslink line reopened in 1988 but only central sections between Kentish Town and London Bridge/Elephant & Castle are shown. Since 1970, maps have used a reversed red on white British Rail "double arrow" beside the Underground station name to indicate main line interchanges, although this has not always been consistent. Contemporary maps also mark stations that offer step-free access with a blue circle containing a wheelchair symbol.
